Report: Membership counts over time

The Membership Counts Over Time report shows how many memberships your organization had at each point in time, in total and per membership type, as a Line Chart or Stacked Bar Chart with a table beneath it. It is a snapshot count, not a total sold: a membership that was active all year appears in every period of that year.

Report options:

• Report Time Range: the date range to chart, the Interval (daily through annual), and the Metric: the count at the start of each interval, at its end, or the maximum or minimum reached within it. Minimum is the one to pick when looking for dips from freezes inside a period.
• Count Type: Whole Memberships counts a group membership once; Individual Members counts each member of a group membership separately.
• Discount Association: only count memberships that receive a discount through the chosen association.
• Billing Locations: each period counts a membership under the location it billed to at the time, so moving a membership between locations moves its count from that period on.
• Report Columns: which statuses to show, as Active count, Frozen count, and Payment Failed count, and which columns to break them out by: Total plus one per membership type.

What each status counts: an active membership counts under Active, a frozen one under Frozen, and a membership whose latest recurring payment failed and has not yet been recovered or cancelled counts under Payment Failed. A payment still processing counts under Active or Frozen, whichever the membership was before. A membership whose first payment is still pending counts under none of them.

Note on a bill-date change: when many memberships renew on the same day, the failed renewals move from Active to Payment Failed together. A drop of 40 in the Active column matched by a rise of 40 in the Payment Failed column is a billing problem to chase, not 40 cancellations; a cancellation shows as a drop in Active with no matching rise anywhere.

Example use cases: Chart active and frozen counts per membership type over the past year to see the seasonal freeze pattern. Turn on the Payment Failed column after a synchronized bill date to size how much of a one-day drop is failed payments waiting on a fixed payment method. Use the Minimum metric by month to find the low point each period.
